Sam loved his mother. Even if he didn’t know her, he loved her.

But why? He only met her once. And she was a spirit.

And they didn’t even really speak that much. So why would he love her? Why would he miss her? How can he love someone he doesn’t know?

But he did know her.

Sure, John probably didn’t talk much about her, but Dean did. Not at first, but slowly, if he asked about her, Dean would tell him anything he remembered. Told Sam what she smelled like, what she sounded like, what it felt like to hug her, how her cookies tasted.

And, of course, Dean needed to remember. When he had to take care of Sammy, and Dad was gone, as he so often was, he had to remember Mom, what she would do, how she would act. When Sammy was sick, he remembered what soup Mom would make him, and how she put a washcloth on his head to cool him down. Dean remembered the airplane spoon from when he gave her trouble eating. He rememberd how she’d sleep with him when he was having nightmares and hug him until he fell asleep, so when Sammy woke up crying, he knew what to do. Dean remembered what Mom did to make him feel better when he was sad, and use that to comfort and raise his little brother. Mary taught her eldest son so much about how to love.

So of course Sam loved his mother.

He saw her every time he looked at Dean.
